The festival of Dhanteras is also known as Dhantrayodashi and Dhanvantari Jayanti. This festival marks the beginning of the Diwali celebrations. The term Dhanteras consists of two factors 'Dhan', which means wealth and 'Teras', which means thirteenth. Here thirteenth is meant to indicate the day 'Trayodashi', i.e. the thirteenth lunar day of Krishna Paksha, of the Hindu month of Kartik, which is two days before Diwali, on which Dhanteras falls. This year it falls on 11th November, 2012.
This day is regarded as the birth of Lord Dhanvantari. According to the mythology, Lord Dhanvantari appeared holding a pot of amrit and Ayurveda shastra in his hand at the end of the Samudra manthan. Everyone benefits with the amrit and ayurveda and since then he was known as the father of Ayurveda or Ayurveda Dhanvantari. So this Day is Celebrated as Dhanvantari Jayanti. He was the doctor of gods in all the three worlds. The festival of Diwali in India commences with Dhanteras. This is one of the most auspicious day for Hindus. This is the the day for beginning of five festivals in a row : Dhanteras, Narak Chaturdashi or Choti Diwali, Deepawali, Govardhan Puja and Bhai Dooj.
On Dhanteras the houses are cleaned and rangoli is made at the enterance of the house. In the evening the candles or Diyas are lighted at different areas of the house, for welcoming the idol of goddess Lakshami. It is believed that purchase of utensils, silver, gold etc. considered to be auspicious which brings wealth and happiness in the house. At some places the Ayurveda scriptures are also worshipped. Even Lord Yamraj is also worshipped on this day by lightning lamps to keep away the fear of death.
